Café Au Lait

Cafe Au Lait in blue coffee mug with spices sprinkled on top for added flavor

In France, café au lait means coffee with milk. Half drip coffee, half just-under-boiling milk, it's traditionally served in a bowl. The New Orleans custom of adding chicory to coffee began as a way to stretch coffee supply when shipments were cut off during the American Civil War. Chicory lends subtle chocolate flavors to this drink.

Ingredients

  • 2 ounces cold brew coffee concentrate (Use New Orleans Style coffee or coffee beans with chicory.)
  • 6 ounces milk
  • Pinch of cinnamon

Directions

Heat coffee concentrate and milk in a 12-ounce steaming pitcher. (Do not boil.) Pour into mug and dust with a touch of cinnamon.
